Domaine Elian Da Ros

Though Elian Da Ros wasn’t born in a barrel, he pictured himself a winemaker before he could even read or write. The son of Italian immigrants, his grandfather Giovanni left the Dolomites in 1922 to come to France. Upon settling in the Marmandais, the family set-up their trade as market gardeners, simultaneously growing cereals and a few rows of vines. Elian's father, who owned the farm, later acquired 7 hectares of hillsideon which he planted Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon grapes from old vines of Médoc and Saint Emilion. From an early age Elian wanted to work the land, so he followed an internship with Jacky Clerget in Monthélie while studying at the agricultural high school in La Tour Blanche. He developed a keen interest in vineyards and the notion of soil identity. Back in the south of France, he completed a BTS in viti oeno in Montpellier and made friends with Laurent Vaillé (Domaine de la Grange des Pères) with whom he will share some of his best tastings. In 1997, the spirited young winegrower returned to the family Domain with an idea: to work healthy grapes, without inputs, and to produce wines with a Nordic balance. Staying true to his passion for the Loire Cabernet Franc, Elian opted for infusion rather than extraction. In 2002, he began converting the Domaine to biodynamic farming. His latest vintages are flamboyant. Coucou Blanc is a blend of Sauvignon (70%) and Semillon. A wine that is always broad shouldered but never heavy. Its bitter notes maintain its good balance as an ideal table wine. Chante Coucou is a fine blend of Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil is clay and limestone but its vines are rooted in a subsoil of grey and blue marls. The bouquet alternates between cocoa, orange peel and dried tomato. Sublime!
